By Adam Rizvi | Editor-in-Chief, The India Observer (TIO): Camden County, NJ: As excitement builds for the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026, Governor Mikie Sherrill announced a $5 million “NJ World Cup Community Initiative” grant program aimed at bringing the global tournament’s energy beyond stadiums and into communities across the Garden State.

The initiative will fund 34 New Jersey organizations to host public fan experiences, cultural festivals, watch parties, and community events leading up to and during the 2026 World Cup. The goal is to ensure that residents across North, Central, and South Jersey can participate in the historic tournament while also supporting local small businesses.

The grants were developed and funded through the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA), with application administration handled by Choose New Jersey in coordination with the FIFA World Cup 2026 New York New Jersey Host Committee.

“This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to showcase New Jersey on the global stage,” Governor Sherrill said while announcing the initiative in Camden County. “These grants will help ensure that the benefits of hosting the World Cup extend beyond the stadium. By empowering communities and supporting small businesses, we are creating experiences that bring residents and visitors together across the state.”

Officials say the community initiative will help create fan zones, street festivals, and cultural celebrations across dozens of municipalities. These events are intended to amplify the economic impact of the tournament by attracting visitors and encouraging spending at local businesses.

According to NJEDA CEO Evan Weiss, the program represents a collaboration between state agencies and regional partners.

“This initiative will help transform the world’s largest sporting event into an economic driver for communities and small businesses throughout New Jersey,” Weiss said.

Amy Herbold noted that the organization worked closely with local partners to ensure that the events reflect the state’s diversity while supporting small businesses that will benefit from increased tourism.

“Our goal is to make sure these community events are inclusive, impactful, and reflective of New Jersey’s vibrant communities,” Herbold said.

All grant-supported events will also participate in the Welcome World Rewards Program, a digital platform designed to encourage visitors to explore local businesses and attractions across the region.

Through the program, fans attending events can check in digitally to earn points redeemable for official merchandise, exclusive experiences, and World Cup match tickets.

State officials say the initiative will help distribute the economic benefits of the tournament beyond the stadium area, bringing visitors into downtown districts, neighborhood commercial corridors, and cultural hubs throughout New Jersey.

With the 2026 World Cup expected to attract millions of visitors to the New York–New Jersey region, state leaders see the tournament as a major opportunity to showcase the Garden State’s cultural diversity, tourism destinations, and small businesses.

By funding community-driven events statewide, officials say the initiative ensures that the excitement of the World Cup will be felt far beyond match venues.
