The event was held at the future site of Rojo’s Roastery & The Gingered Peach, where the Governor met with business owners, community leaders, and lawmakers to discuss strategies to reduce barriers and help minority and women entrepreneurs grow their businesses.

Among those participating in the discussion were business owners Joanne Canady-Brown and Kelly Gonzalez, alongside key state and local officials including Teresa Ruiz, Verlina Reynolds-Jackson, and Yazminelly Gonzalez.

Governor Sherrill emphasized that supporting minority and women entrepreneurs is a critical part of strengthening New Jersey’s economy.

“We’re committed to making New Jersey the best place to start and grow a business — including for minority and women entrepreneurs where longstanding disparities have deprived them of critical opportunities,” Governor Sherrill said. “By working together with business owners and community leaders, we can break down barriers and streamline government so that entrepreneurs can reach their full potential and build generational wealth.”

As part of her proposed Fiscal Year 2027 budget, Governor Sherrill announced $500,000 in funding aimed at expanding technical assistance for minority- and women-owned businesses seeking state contracts.

The funding will support a dedicated team of experts who will provide training and guidance to business owners on how to navigate New Jersey’s procurement processes — an effort designed to address longstanding disparities in state contract awards.

Minority-owned businesses historically receive significantly fewer government contracts, despite representing a substantial portion of small businesses in the state.

The funding initiative is part of a broader strategy to connect minority and women entrepreneurs with the tools and resources needed to succeed.

The administration’s plan includes strengthening the role of the New Jersey Business Action Center as a centralized “one-stop shop” for business assistance and resources.

Additional programs include support through the New Jersey Economic Development Authority Small Business Bonding Readiness Assistance Program, which provides workshops and training for business owners seeking to qualify for larger contracts.

The state’s Wealth Disparities Initiative also aims to address economic gaps by supporting entrepreneurship, housing opportunities, and financial stability in underserved communities.

Editorial Reflection

For many minority and immigrant entrepreneurs, navigating government systems can be confusing and time-consuming. Programs that simplify access to resources and open doors to state contracts can play a meaningful role in helping small businesses grow.

As conversations around economic opportunity continue in New Jersey, initiatives that promote fairness, transparency, and access to capital will remain central to building a stronger and more inclusive business environment.
