OC USA New Jersey Delegation Meets Congress Leadership in New Delhi, Discusses Diaspora Engagement

NEW DELHI / NEW JERSEY: A delegation from the New Jersey chapter of the Indian Overseas Congress (IOC USA) recently concluded a three-day visit to New Delhi, holding a series of meetings with senior leaders of the Indian National Congress to discuss diaspora engagement and the role of overseas supporters in strengthening democratic dialogue.

The delegation was led by Pradip (Peter) Kothari, President of the IOC New Jersey Chapter, and Harkesh Thakur, Chairman of the chapter. The visit took place under the broader leadership of Sam Pitroda, Chairman of Global IOC; Arathi Krishna, Secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC); and Mohinder Singh Gilzian, President of IOC USA.

During their visit, the delegation met with several senior leaders of the Congress party, including:

Mallikarjun Kharge, President of the Indian National Congress and Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha

  • Rahul Gandhi, senior Congress leader and Member of Parliament
  • K. C. Venugopal, AICC General Secretary
  • Vivek Tankha, Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) and senior advocate
  • Anil Shastri, senior Congress leader and son of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri
  • Gurdeep Singh Sappal, AICC Administration In-Charge

According to organizers, the meetings focused on strengthening cooperation between Congress supporters in the global Indian diaspora and the party’s leadership in India.

In addition to Kothari and Thakur, the New Jersey delegation included:

  •  Mahesh Patel – Vice President, Asif Rajav Ali  -Cultural Secretary, Raju Desai – Treasurer, Rekha Desai – Executive Committee Member, Gopal Krishna – Coordinator, Syed Saleem – Coordinator

Other IOC leaders who participated in discussions during the visit included Baldev Randhawa, Vice President of IOC USA, and Davinderpal Singh Bhullar, IOC Working President for the West Coast.

As part of the visit, the delegation hosted a Meet & Greet luncheon with prominent Indian journalists in New Delhi, providing an opportunity to exchange views on a range of political, social, and economic issues currently shaping India’s public discourse.

Delegates also participated in a media interaction hosted by the IOC New Jersey team at Telangana Bhavan in New Delhi.

During their stay in the capital, members of the delegation also met Anil Shastri at the historic Shastri family residence, now preserved as the Lal Bahadur Shastri Memorial. The residence shares a boundary with the homes of Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.

Delegates described the interaction as a meaningful exchange reflecting on the legacy of past leadership while discussing the evolving role of democratic institutions and diaspora engagement.

The delegation also paid respects at Rajghat, the national memorial dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi. The site marks the location where Gandhi was cremated in January 1948 and remains one of India’s most significant national memorials.

Senior Congress leader and Member of Parliament Vivek Tankha hosted the delegation for a dinner interaction at the Vasant Vihar Club in New Delhi, where discussions included legal, democratic, and diaspora-related issues.

The delegation also attended a dinner hosted by AICC Secretary Arathi Krishna at Karnataka Bhavan, where participants engaged in further discussions with senior Karnataka leader H. K. Patil, who currently holds key ministerial portfolios including Tourism, Law, Justice, and Human Rights in the Government of Karnataka.

Organizers of the visit expressed appreciation to several individuals who offered guidance and assistance in facilitating discussions and coordination during the delegation’s visit to New Delhi.

Among those acknowledged were senior journalist Saeed Naqvi, Indian National Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera, and senior Congress leader Imran Kidwai, who provided consultation and guidance during the planning stages of the visit.

Community leader Syed Rizvi also assisted by reaching out to contacts in New Delhi to help facilitate introductions with Members of Parliament and political leaders.

Additional outreach support was extended by former Maharashtra Minister of State Azhar Hussain, while locally in New Jersey, coordination and administrative support were provided by Rajiv Barot and Qayam Masumi, who assisted the IOC New Jersey team in preparations and communication for the visit.

Delegation leaders said the visit was aimed at strengthening dialogue between overseas supporters of the Congress party and its leadership in India while encouraging greater engagement of Indian diaspora communities in democratic discourse.
