Governor Mikie Sherrill Appoints Lisa Montalbano as New Jersey Ombudsman for Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

By Adam Rizvi | Editor-in-Chief, The India Observer (TIO): TRENTON, NJ — Governor Mikie Sherrill has announced the appointment of Lisa Montalbano as New Jersey’s Ombudsman for Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities and their Families, reinforcing the state’s commitment to supporting residents with disabilities and ensuring families can better navigate critical services and resources.
According to the Governor’s Office, Montalbano will lead the Office of the Ombudsman for Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDDO), which serves as a key resource for families seeking assistance with state systems of care, disability support programs, and access to services that promote dignity, independence, and inclusion.
Governor Sherrill praised Montalbano’s extensive experience working with individuals and families across New Jersey.
“Lisa brings more than two decades of experience connecting individuals with disabilities and their families with opportunities,” Governor Sherrill said in a statement. “I am confident that under her leadership, this Office will serve as an invaluable resource in ensuring New Jersey residents can connect with the State’s diverse array of supports and services.”
Montalbano said she was honored to accept the role and expressed her commitment to helping New Jersey residents access essential resources and support systems.
“I look forward to partnering with the Governor to ensure New Jerseyans with intellectual and developmental disabilities can access the tools and resources to thrive,” she said.
Under New Jersey law, the Ombudsperson’s responsibilities include helping individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families obtain information, navigate services provided through the Department of Human Services and the Department of Children and Families, assist in dispute resolution efforts, and identify broader issues impacting the disability community.
Before her appointment, Montalbano served as Chief Executive Officer of Employment Horizons, a nonprofit organization focused on creating employment opportunities and support systems for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Her work helped build partnerships throughout New Jersey’s disability advocacy and family support network.
Advocates say the appointment comes at a time when many families continue to seek clearer guidance and stronger coordination among state support programs, healthcare services, education systems, and employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities.
