Governor Sherrill, Attorney General Davenport Condemn Violence Outside Delaney Hall; Localized Curfew Announced

By Adam Rizvi | Editor-in-Chief, The India Observer (TIO): NEWARK, N.J. — Tensions surrounding Delaney Hall escalated Sunday night after state officials reported that a group of individuals engaged in violent and dangerous actions outside the facility, prompting a law enforcement response and the implementation of a localized curfew.
Earlier in the day, The India Observer attended a public safety briefing near Delaney Hall where Governor Mikie Sherrill, Attorney General Jennifer Davenport, faith leaders, and public officials addressed ongoing concerns regarding conditions at the detention facility and public safety in the surrounding area.
Hours later, Governor Sherrill issued a statement condemning what she described as aggressive actions by masked individuals who allegedly attacked barriers established in a protected protest area.
According to the Governor, individuals threw projectiles, used barriers as weapons, and set tires on fire in the street, creating dangerous conditions for both protesters and law enforcement officers.
“My number one priority will always be public safety, and I remain dedicated to protecting constitutional rights,” Governor Sherrill said.
The Governor emphasized that peaceful protest remains protected while calling on advocates and community members to remain focused on ensuring humane treatment for detainees and continued calls for the closure of Delaney Hall.
Attorney General Jennifer Davenport also condemned the violence, stating that a coalition of local and state law enforcement agencies, including the Newark Police Department and New Jersey State Police, were required to intervene after individuals allegedly attempted to breach restricted areas and confront officers.
According to Davenport, some individuals charged at officers, threw projectiles, damaged barriers, and set fires in the area surrounding the facility.
To address public safety concerns, Newark officials announced a localized overnight curfew extending approximately one-half mile in each direction from Delaney Hall. The curfew will remain in effect from 9:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m. until further notice.
State officials stressed that the overwhelming majority of demonstrators had remained peaceful and reiterated support for the constitutional right to peaceful protest.
Attorney General Davenport thanked peaceful protesters who have continued drawing attention to concerns about conditions inside Delaney Hall while emphasizing that violence and property damage undermine lawful advocacy efforts.
The developments mark the latest chapter in the growing controversy surrounding Delaney Hall, which has become the focus of ongoing disputes involving detention conditions, transparency, immigration enforcement, public safety, and oversight by state and federal authorities.
