By Adam Rizvi | Editor-in-Chief, The India Observer (TIO): Mikie Sherrill has issued a strong statement expressing deep concern over reports of unsafe and inhumane conditions at Delaney Hall, renewing her opposition to private detention facilities and calling for accountability and oversight.
In a statement released on May 24, Governor Sherrill said she was “deeply disturbed” by reports surrounding conditions inside the detention facility, describing the alleged environment as “unsafe, inhumane, and unconstitutional.”
The Governor reiterated her long-standing opposition to privately operated detention centers and emphasized that reports emerging from Delaney Hall reinforce the need for immediate scrutiny and reform.
“I have long opposed private detention facilities and advocated against them. I will continue to call for the closure of Delaney Hall because of reports like these,” Governor Sherrill stated.
According to the Governor’s office, she has contacted ICE officials seeking access to the facility and said her administration remains in communication with federal representatives and advocacy groups monitoring the situation.
Governor Sherrill also praised advocates and members of New Jersey’s federal delegation for their continued oversight efforts and their push to hold the Department of Homeland Security accountable.

The issue of detention conditions has remained a highly sensitive topic across the United States, with ongoing national debates surrounding immigration enforcement, detainee rights, oversight standards, and the role of private detention operators.
The Governor concluded her statement by affirming that her administration will continue monitoring developments closely to ensure humane treatment and constitutional protections are upheld.
