By Adam Rizvi | Editor-in-Chief, The India Observer (TIO): Governor Mikie Sherrill Says NJ Health Officials Were Denied Full Access During Delaney Hall Inspection

Governor Mikie Sherrill has intensified calls for transparency and accountability at Delaney Hall after the New Jersey Department of Health reportedly was denied full access while attempting to conduct an inspection of the facility.

In a statement released on May 28, Governor Sherrill said state health officials were only permitted to inspect a limited portion of Delaney Hall during their visit, raising additional concerns about conditions inside the detention facility.

“The New Jersey Department of Health today sought to conduct a health inspection of Delaney Hall, but it was denied full access and was allowed to inspect only a limited part of the facility,” Governor Sherrill stated.

According to the Governor, the state will review and publicly share findings from the areas inspectors were permitted to access while continuing efforts to obtain greater transparency regarding the facility’s operations and living conditions.

Governor Sherrill further questioned ICE’s refusal to provide broader access, saying the lack of transparency raises “serious questions” about what federal authorities may be withholding from public view.

“As I’ve said repeatedly, refusing to provide full access raises serious questions about what ICE is trying to hide from public view,” the Governor added.

The latest statement marks another escalation in the growing controversy surrounding Delaney Hall, which has become the focus of mounting scrutiny from state officials, advocacy organizations, and members of New Jersey’s congressional delegation.

Governor Sherrill reiterated her position that Delaney Hall should be shut down and called on federal authorities to reduce tensions surrounding the situation.

“New Jersey believes in the rule of law, will uphold the Constitution, and Delaney Hall should be closed down. I am calling for ICE to immediately de-escalate the situation as I continue working to keep New Jersey residents safe,” she said.

The ongoing dispute has drawn attention to broader national debates over immigration detention policies, federal oversight, detainee welfare, and the role of private detention facilities in the United States.
