Governor Sherrill Joins Opening of Nation’s First Health & Wellness Center at Metropark Transit Hub

By Adam Rizvi | Editor-in-Chief, The India Observer (TIO): ISELIN, NJ — New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill joined healthcare leaders, elected officials, and community representatives Wednesday to celebrate the opening of the nation’s first comprehensive health and wellness center located at a major transit hub, a new facility designed to make medical care more accessible to commuters and local residents.

The new center, operated by Hackensack Meridian Health, is located at Hackensack Meridian Health & Wellness Center Metropark, steps away from the busy Metropark Station, one of the region’s major rail hubs serving both NJ Transit and Amtrak passengers.

The $200 million facility is part of Hackensack Meridian Health’s $3 billion statewide investment to expand access to healthcare, bringing a wide range of services into one easily accessible location.

Governor Sherrill highlighted the project as an example of forward-looking development linking healthcare access with transportation infrastructure.

“The new Health & Wellness Center at Metropark is exactly the kind of smart, forward-looking investment our state needs,” Governor Sherrill said. “By locating this center steps from a major transit hub and incorporating new housing, we are advancing transit-oriented development that makes it easier for residents to live, work, and access care without relying on a car.”

The Metropark center is the first comprehensive health and wellness facility in the United States located directly at a major transit hub, allowing commuters and nearby residents to conveniently access medical services before or after traveling.

With approximately 60,000 commuters passing through Metropark Station each month, healthcare leaders say the location provides a unique opportunity to encourage preventive care and routine medical visits.

The center offers a wide range of services including:

  • Advanced imaging
  • Urgent Care Plus
  • Primary care
  • Surgical and medical specialties
  • Retail pharmacy
  • Physical and occupational therapy
  • Rehabilitation services
  • Laboratory services including bloodwork

The grand opening ceremony drew a large crowd of healthcare professionals, community members, and local officials.

Among those attending were State Assemblyman Sterley Stanley, State Assemblyman Robert Karabinchak, former Edison Mayor Thomas Lankey, and Middlesex County Commissioner Director Ronald G. Rios.

Following the remarks, invited guests toured the new facility, where staff demonstrated the center’s design, services, and patient-focused healthcare model.

The health and wellness center is also part of a broader redevelopment effort around Metropark Station aimed at transforming the area into a transit-oriented community with housing, offices, retail space, and healthcare services within walking distance of public transportation.

Officials say the project reflects a growing trend of integrating healthcare services into everyday locations where people live, work, and commute.
