Governor Sherrill Announces Next Major Award for Gateway Project at Regional Plan Association 2026 Assembly

By Adam Rizvi | Editor-in-Chief, The India Observer (TIO): New York: Mikie Sherrill, Governor of New Jersey, announced the next major phase of the historic Gateway Program Hudson River Rail Tunnel while delivering the keynote address at the 2026 Assembly of the Regional Plan Association in New York.
The Governor revealed that the Gateway Development Commission is expected to award the contract next month for the New Jersey Surface Alignment, a critical section of the broader Gateway Program that will modernize rail service between New Jersey and New York.
The New Jersey Surface Alignment will include approximately two miles of elevated rail tracks running across the Meadowlands toward the Palisades, forming the visible approach before trains enter the new tunnel beneath the Hudson River.
“This is the next major portion of work,” Governor Sherrill said during her remarks. “It will create thousands of good union jobs, and I’ll always fight for those jobs and for the Gateway workers I’ve been lucky to get to know.”

During the event, Governor Mikie Sherrill thanked several public officials and regional leaders supporting the Gateway project, including State Senator Raj Mukherji, Assemblyman Clinton Calabrese, NJ Transit CEO Kris Kolluri, transportation officials,Priya and members of New Jersey’s housing and infrastructure teams.
The Gateway Program is widely considered one of the most important infrastructure efforts in the United States. The project will build the first new heavy-rail tunnel between New Jersey and New York in more than 115 years, helping modernize one of the nation’s busiest rail corridors.

For millions of commuters traveling daily between the two states, the aging rail infrastructure beneath the Hudson River has long been viewed as a major bottleneck affecting reliability and economic growth across the Northeast.
Governor Sherrill said the new phase of construction will help ensure safer, faster, and more dependable transit for the region’s riders.
According to the Governor, the surface alignment phase will also bring thousands of new union construction jobs, adding to the tens of thousands of jobs expected across the full Gateway Program.
The broader project is projected to support more than 100,000 jobs over time, while strengthening economic connectivity throughout the Northeast Corridor.
Sherrill emphasized that the effort represents more than a transportation project.

“Well-run government is about delivering for people,” she said. “This is about building opportunity and making our region more connected and ready for the future.”
The Governor also noted that her administration has fought legal battles to protect federal funding for the Gateway Program after attempts were made to cancel the project.
New Jersey officials successfully challenged those actions in court, helping restore funding so construction could continue on both sides of the Hudson River
With the surface alignment contract expected next month, the project is moving closer to completing the long-anticipated tunnel that transportation experts say will transform rail travel in the region.
