Governor Sherrill Says Dropped Gateway Tunnel Appeal Is a Victory for New Jersey Commuters and Workers

By Adam Rizvi | Editor, The India Observer (TIO): NEW JERSEY — Governor Mikie Sherrill on Friday welcomed the Trump administration’s decision to drop its latest appeal involving funding for the Gateway Tunnel Project, calling the development a victory for New Jersey commuters and workers.

In a stateIment released September 18, Sherrill said:
“This is a big victory for millions of New Jersey commuters and for the nearly 100,000 jobs the Gateway Tunnel Project will create.”
The Governor said her administration has repeatedly challenged efforts to stop Gateway funding in court.

“The Trump Administration has tried, over and over again, to illegally stop the funding for the nation’s most urgent infrastructure project,” Sherrill said. “We took them to court and we won for New Jerseyans, five times.”
She added: “I won’t stop fighting until this project is built.”
The Gateway Program is intended to expand and modernize rail infrastructure between New Jersey and New York, including the Hudson Tunnel Project beneath the Hudson River.

The latest development follows a series of legal disputes over federal funding for Gateway. The Governor’s office has previously announced court actions involving the federal funding freeze, including statements from February and March concerning litigation over the project.
