New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill has credited the state’s political organizing and campaign strategy with helping shape Democratic victories in the 2026 midterm elections, highlighting the state’s role in supporting congressional candidates and strengthening the party’s national position.
In a statement released following Tuesday’s elections, Sherrill pointed to New Jersey’s 2025 gubernatorial campaign as a model that Democratic candidates across the country drew upon during the 2026 election cycle.
She said the approach focused on reaching voters across communities, investing in grassroots organizing, and addressing issues affecting working families, including affordability, education and government accountability.
Sherrill also highlighted the state’s involvement in key congressional races, saying New Jersey had provided early campaign infrastructure and strategic support to candidates in competitive districts.
Bennett Flips Republican-Held Seat as Mullock Leads in NJ-2
Among the victories singled out by the Governor were those of Rebecca Bennett and Zack Mullock, in two previously Republican-held U.S. House seats.
Bennett defeated Republican incumbent Tom Kean Jr. in New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District, while Mullock led Republican incumbent Jeff Van Drew in the 2nd District. Mullock was called the winner by CNN and Decision Desk HQ; the Associated Press had not yet called the race.
Sherrill also congratulated Democratic Congresswoman Nellie Pou on defending her seat in New Jersey’s 9th Congressional District.
The three races represented different electoral challenges, with Bennett winning a seat previously held by a Republican, Mullock leading in another Republican-held district, and Pou retaining a Democratic-held district.
Looking Ahead to Washington
Sherrill said the election results would give her administration stronger partners in Washington as it pursues its priorities on affordability and other issues affecting New Jersey residents.
She emphasized the importance of cooperation between state and federal leaders, particularly on policies affecting household costs and public services.
The Governor also described the results as a message from voters seeking leadership focused on their concerns and willing to address difficult challenges.
“A new generation of leadership is coming, and I am ready to work alongside them,” Sherrill said.
The new congressional delegation will take office in January 2027. Its relationship with the Sherrill administration will be an important part of the state’s efforts to advance its priorities in Washington.
