South Kolkata bridge collapses, several trapped under debris


The Majerhat bridge collapsed during peak hours of traffic and it is being feared that many people and vehicles might be trapped under the debris.

 

Kolkata Sept 4: A portion of a prominent bridge at Kolkata’s Majerhat has collapsed, trapping several underneath the debris. Several cars are also trapped under the collapsed section of the bridge.

Locals have started rescue operations, some of who claim four persons have died already, however, it is yet to be confirmed by officials.

The bridge connects Behala to other parts of Kolkata across the arterial Sealdah railway line. The bridge runs over the Majerhat railway station.
The bridge collapsed during peak hours of traffic and it is being feared that many people and vehicles might be trapped under the debris.

Several cars, motorbikes and a mini bus can be seen lying on top of the collapsed bridge.

In 2016, 26 people were killed when Vivekananda Road flyover collapsed in Kolkata.

The IIT-Kharagpur report had stated that the design of the flyover was faulty and there was lack of use of proper construction material, faulty design approval and wrongful project execution by the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA).

The flyover had collapsed on March 31 last killing 26 people and senior officials of a Hyderabad-based construction firm along with officials of the KMDA were arrested in this connection.
