By Adam Rizvi, The India Observer, TIO: South Brunswick, NJ, 11/04/2025 — CAIR Action NJ, the state’s largest Muslim political advocacy organization, has strongly condemned recent false and Islamophobic statements made by South Brunswick Board of Education candidate Magesh Kamalakannan targeting current Board member and candidate Alisha Khan.
According to CAIR Action NJ, Kamalakannan and some of his supporters shared posts on Facebook and WhatsApp falsely claiming that Khan is endorsed by a so-called “terrorist organization,” referencing CAIR.

Kamalakannan attached a screenshot of the proposed Congressional bill HR 4097 (“Designate CAIR as a Terrorist Organization Act”), introduced by Florida Congressman Randy Fine. The bill has had no significant support and has not moved out of committee for months. Kamalakannan also accused Khan of trying to force her religion on South Brunswick schools — claims CAIR Action NJ describes as “categorically false, reckless, and defamatory.”
“Labeling a Muslim civic organization or its supporters as ‘terrorist’ is a well-worn Islamophobic trope intended to silence Muslim voices and intimidate community members from engaging in public life,” said Ali Aljarrah, Senior Advisor of CAIR Action NJ.

Omayma Mansour, Policy Advisor for CAIR Action NJ, added: “Defamation of character, particularly during an election, erodes public trust and chills civic participation. Our community deserves an environment where candidates run on their ideas and dedication to public service—not be subjected to false accusations or hate-driven attacks.”
CAIR Action NJ emphasized that neither it nor its affiliated nonprofit CAIR-NJ has ever been designated or investigated as a “terrorist organization” by any credible authority. The organization called on community leaders, elected officials, and South Brunswick residents to reject divisive rhetoric and focus on the candidate’s record, ideas, and service.

“This incident is part of a broader pattern of Islamophobia and racism targeting Muslim public figures across the country, from smears against New York City Democratic primary winner Zohran Mamdani to Islamophobic attacks by figures such as Laura Loomer,” the statement said.
CAIR Action NJ and its affiliates are reviewing options to address the spread of this misinformation and ensure accountability for those responsible. The organization’s mission includes engaging, educating, and mobilizing Muslim voters, training emerging leaders, and championing policies that strengthen community representation.
