Paraguayan President visit to India 2-4 June

Besides official meetings, the President will visit Mumbai and have business interactions.

President Santiago Pena, although from the conservative Colorado party, is pragmatic and balanced in his internal and external policies. The Colorados had ruled the country continuously for 61 years until 2008 when Fernando Lugo, the leftist ” Bishop of the Poor” defeated the Colorado candidate and made history. They returned to power in 2013.
Paraguay is the only country in Latin America where the native language Guarani is spoken by all the citizens, besides Spanish, the official language,
Paraguay is the only South American country which continues to recognize Taiwan.
Pena, relatively young at 46, was finance minister from 2013 to 2018 when his mentor Horacio Cartes was President. He had taught economics in a university in Paraguay and had worked in IMF. He went to Columbia University, New York for his post graduation.
Paraguay, with a population of 6.7 million, is a low-income country. Its economy is stable, with a vibrant agribusiness sector. It is the fourth-largest exporter of soybeans in the world. The country has a surplus of electricity from the Itaipu Dam, which it jointly owns with Brazil. Paraguay exports electricity to Brazil.
Paraguay is a member of the regional group Mercosur whose members include Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay.
India opened an embassy in Paraguay in 2022, while Paraguay maintains an embassy in Delhi since 2006.
India’s exports to Paraguay in 2023-24 were 212 million dollars. There is good scope to scale up the exports in the coming years.
Dr. Mohan Kohli, an Indian agricultural scientist and wheat specialist, is a senior scientific consultant to the Paraguayan National Wheat Programme. Thanks to his contribution, Paraguay has become a wheat exporter after having been an importer till 2004. In recognition of this, he was conferred a Honorary Doctorate from the San Carlos University of Paraguay.
