Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau leaves family-centric India impressed

By Dr Shirin Abbas, India & Adam Rizvi, USA, TIO: Ever since Canadian prime minister’s visit to the Taj Mahal in Agra and an Elephant Rescue Sanctuary in Mathura, images of the handsome premier and his family are flooding social media sites with Indians, especially women drooling over his clean good looks and family values.

Images of the Trudeau family’s hour-long visit to the world-renowned monument of love, the Taj Mahal in Agra have made front-page news Monday morning. Mr Trudeau, his wife Sophie Gregoire and three children Xavier, Ella Grace and Hadrien were given a traditional welcome at the Taj. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Trudeau referred to his visit to the monument 35 years ago when he had come to India with his father, the then Canadian premier, Pierre Trudeau. “For me to be present on an official trip while bringing my kids with me to share this, is really special,” he commented.

The family not only viewed the monument and posed on the bow-famous Diana bench, where Princess Diana had posed solo during the royal couple’s visit to India, but also visited the graves of Emperor Shah Jehan and his wife Mumtaz Mahal in the basement. True to his perfect manners and polite nature, Prime Minister Trudeau wrote in the Visitor’s Book, “Thank you for the wonderful visit to one of the most beautiful places in the world.” His family also shared their experience in the book, wife Sophie writing down “Incredible” in the comments section whereas his youngest son, 3-year-old deftly jotted an H to add to his “Been there, done that” list.

Later the Trudeau family paid a visit to a rescued elephants care centre run by animal welfare organization Wildlife SOS in Mathura. Appreciating this great move to put a stop to cruelty against animals, Trudeau said more such initiatives would be welcome to save wildlife in India.”What an incredible place with wonderful people doing great things for elephants. The efforts of Wildlife SOS must be supported as we need to protect elephants and all the wildlife in India,” Trudeau remarked during his visit.  The care centre visited by the Trudeaus has 21 elephants, all released from captivity and subjected to extreme cruelty before they were taken up by the animal care shelter.

I was about Xav’s age when I first visited the Taj Mahal almost 35 years ago… and it’s amazing to be back with him & the family on Day 1 of our trip to India.
