By Adam Rizvi, The India Observer, TIO: New York: In a strong show of support for the Indian American business community, Connecticut Congressman Jim Himes (CT-4) has endorsed the Global Organization of People of Indian Origin – Connecticut Chapter (GOPIO-CT) in its opposition to the Trump Administration’s proposed $100,000 H-1B visa fee hike.
The virtual meeting, held on October 9, 2025, brought together GOPIO-CT officials, GOPIO International leaders, and small-business owners directly affected by the policy change. The discussion focused on the economic fallout and the broader impact of the fee increase on American competitiveness and innovation.

Economic and Workforce Impact
Opening the dialogue, Dr. Thomas Abraham, GOPIO Chairman and Advisor to the Connecticut Chapter, cited public data estimating that the H-1B visa program contributes more than $200 billion annually to the U.S. economy, while costing the government only about $8.5 billion.
“By making it difficult for highly qualified professionals to work in the United States,” Dr. Abraham said, “the country will lose out in the long run as talent moves to Canada, Germany, or China — all of which are eager to welcome them.”
He also raised concerns over delays in the U.S.–India bilateral dialogue, stressing the need for more active engagement to resolve pending trade and visa issues.
Small Businesses Sound the Alarm
GOPIO-CT President Mahesh Jhangiani underscored the disproportionate burden the $100,000 visa fee places on small and medium-sized businesses, which lack the financial capacity of larger corporations.

“This policy punishes smaller employers that drive local innovation and job creation,” Jhangiani said, adding that it could lead to layoffs, project cancellations, and loss of competitiveness.
Entrepreneurs Prasad Chintalapudi, Founder of Panzer Solutions, and Shailesh Naik, President of Cameron Engineers, shared real-world examples of how such a policy could force businesses to close or relocate operations overseas.
Chintalapudi pointed out that many global leaders, including Elon Musk, Sundar Pichai, Satya Nadella, and Arvind Krishna, began their journeys in the U.S. through the H-1B program, which has long served as a pipeline for innovation and leadership.

Attorney Nandita Ruchandani, representing Cameron Engineers, highlighted that H-1B professionals include not only tech workers but also doctors, teachers, accountants, and engineers serving in critical sectors across America.
“These workers pay taxes, invest in communities, and support local economies,” she said. “The sudden imposition of a $100,000 fee has already disrupted countless lives and businesses.”
Unity Among Asian American Organizations
Adding her voice of solidarity, Dr. S.K. Lo, Chairperson of the Asian American Unity Coalition (AAUC), emphasized that issues such as these must be tackled collectively. “AAUC stands ready to support GOPIO’s efforts,” Dr. Lo stated.

Congressman Himes Expresses Full Support
Responding to participants, Congressman Jim Himes, now serving his ninth term in Congress and as Ranking Member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, voiced strong agreement with GOPIO’s position.
He acknowledged the “long-term damage” the fee increase could cause by driving skilled professionals out of the U.S. workforce.
“The loss of high-skill workers would be a loss for America,” Rep. Himes said, adding that U.S.–India cooperation in commerce, trade, and defense remains active and essential.
