By Adam Rizvi | Edited for TIO News DesK, The India Observer, TIO: BLOOMFIELD, N.J. — During a televised debate Tuesday night, the Republican ticket once again declared that “all taxes are on the table,” a statement that immediately set off alarms across New Jersey’s political spectrum. Lawmakers, journalists, and voters denounced it as “an all-time boneheaded quote” and “the last thing struggling families need.”

State Senator Vin Gopal summed up the reaction bluntly:

“This is insane. All taxes are on the table — except against millionaires?”

The controversy erupted when Jim Gannon, running mate to Jack Ciattarelli, defended the GOP ticket’s tax policy by insisting that “all taxes are on the table,” but warning that taxing millionaires might be a mistake because “they’re employing us.”

The comment drew swift and sharp criticism at a time when families are battling soaring living costs — from property taxes and utilities to groceries and insurance.

Assemblyman Cody Miller responded:

“Yikes. NJ is already the most taxed state in the nation. Families can’t keep up with rising costs — property taxes, utilities, groceries, insurance, you name it. The last thing we need is another tax or tax increase. We should be cutting costs and making life more affordable, not adding to the burden.”

Even national reporters and analysts weighed in with disbelief:

  • Sam Stein (MSNBC / The Bulwark): “This has to be an all-time boneheaded quote.”
  • Josh Barro (Very Serious podcast): “Oh… oh dear.”
  • David Weigel (Semafor): “‘Taxes are on the table, but I’d be careful of millionaire taxes. They’re employing us.’”
  • Tommy Vietor (Pod Save America): “Hooooboy that is an all-time terrible debate answer right there.”
  • Micah Rasmussen (Rider University): “Oof. ‘Taxes are on the table, but you’ve got to watch out for the millionaires.’”
  • Dan Pfeiffer (Pod Save America): “Some ads write themselves.”
  • Malcolm Kenyatta (PA State Rep.): “Taxes for everyone, EXCEPT checks notes ‘the millionaires.’”
  • Rebecca Katz (Political Consultant): “Dems should run with this — GOP candidates literally saying everyone can get taxed except the millionaires.”

The debate exchange made headlines across New Jersey media:

Insider NJ: “The Gannon Answer That Made Waves in His Showdown with Caldwell”

“As Jim Gannon and Dale Caldwell faced off Tuesday night on WPIX, the millionaire’s tax came up. Gannon’s answer made waves. Asked if the millionaire’s tax was on the table, he said, ‘Taxes are on the table,’ and added, ‘They’re employing us.’”

NJ.com reported:

“Gannon criticized how spending in the state budget has increased under Murphy and said: ‘Taxes are on the table, but I’d be careful of millionaires’ taxes. They’re employing us.’ Asked to clarify if new taxes were on the table, Gannon said: ‘You have to look at the whole thing.’”

New Jersey Globe:

“When asked whether a Ciattarelli governorship would consider increasing taxes on millionaires, Gannon said it’s on the table, but added he would be careful, arguing that millionaires employ many New Jerseyans.”

Meanwhile, Mikie Sherrill and Dale Caldwell continue to center their campaign on cutting costs and protecting working families. Their detailed plan outlines strategies to reduce property taxes, lower utility bills, and put more money back in New Jerseyans’ pockets.

“Mikie and Dale are the only team with a serious plan to make life more affordable,” said a campaign spokesperson. “Jack’s record shows he’s voted to raise taxes at every level of government. Working families deserve leaders who fight for them — not for millionaires.”
