Gandhian Society and Indian Consulate Mark 156th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi in New Jersey

By Alayana Macwan-With inputs from Press Release & Editor-in-Chief Adam Rizvi, The India Observer, TIO: FORDS, NJ (Oct. 4, 2025): The Gandhian Society, in collaboration with the Consulate General of India in New York, organized a grand celebration to commemorate the 156th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi at Royal Albert’s Palace, Fords, NJ. The event drew an impressive gathering of over 400 attendees, including dignitaries, community leaders, and supporters of Gandhian philosophy.
This year’s celebration was led by the tireless efforts of Mr. Bhadra Bhutala, an 83-year-old Gandhian and community leader who has been championing Gandhi’s teachings for decades. Mr. Bhutala, who runs a Khadi store in Edison, NJ, is known for his deep commitment to Gandhian principles of simplicity, truth, and service. He also curates a Gandhian Museum, preserving artifacts and teachings that inspire younger generations to embrace peace and non-violence.

The evening opened with words of reflection and inspiration. Ms. Pragya Singh, Consul for Community and Cultural Affairs, highlighted the timeless relevance of Gandhi’s teachings in today’s divided world, urging the audience to uphold his legacy through selfless service and peaceful coexistence.
Representing the Gandhian Society, Mr. Mahesh Wani, Secretary, presented the Annual Report, detailing the Society’s ongoing educational and humanitarian efforts. These include essay and video competitions for youth, cultural exhibitions, and prayer meets that promote Gandhi’s universal message of peace. He also made a heartfelt appeal for donations to assist flood victims in India, demonstrating the Society’s continued commitment to service beyond borders.

The program featured a soulful Bhajan Sandhya by singer Varsha Joshi, a Khadi Fashion Show by designer Sonal Gadhavi, and a moving stage performance, “Gandhi Zinda Hai,” directed by Deepak Gupta. Local youth artists also participated, adding music, color, and energy to the tribute.
Among the honored guests was Adam Rizvi, Editor-in-Chief of The India Observer, actor, director, and social activist, who was invited on stage and presented with a Certificate of Appreciation recognizing his contributions to the community and commitment to truthful journalism.

Also in attendance was Alisha Khan, Honorable Member of the South Brunswick Board of Education, who is running for her second term. The event brought together leaders, educators, artists, and citizens united by Gandhi’s vision of truth and compassion.
The celebration was generously supported by Dr. Mayesh Patel, husband of the late philanthropist Shobna Patel, along with Albert, the owner of Royal Albert’s Palace, who continues to extend his venue for community-driven events.
Mr. Rajender Dichpally, Director of Public Relations for the Gandhian Society, along with his dedicated team, played a key role in organizing the event and maintaining the Society’s strong presence in community affairs.

Expressing gratitude, Mrs. Bhadra Butala, Founder of the Gandhian Society, emphasized that the mission of Mahatma Gandhi continues through collective compassion and action. “We must live his values daily — peace begins with each of us,” she said.
