Former RBI chief Raghuram Rajan invited by VHP to speak at World Hindu Congress in Chicago

To commemorate 125 years of Swami Vivekananda’s landmark address at the Parliament of World Religions in Chicago, the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) invited former Reserve Bank of India governor Raghuram Rajan to speak at the World Hindu Congress, reported The Economic Times.

“He has said he will try, so we are hoping he will make it”, an organiser, who wished to remain anonymous, told Economic Times

The decision to invite Rajan is significant because some leaders in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, were critical of Rajan’s policies when he was RBI governor.

“On September 11, the day the world will mark the attack on twin tours, we want to ask people to choose between a religion that spreads hate and the one that preaches universal brotherhood,” said Swami Vigyananand, a former IITian who heads the World Hindu Foundation and is also the joint general secretary of the VHP.

Swami Vivekananda had addressed the Parliament of World Religions in Chicago on September 11, 1893. The World Hindu Congress will be held in Chicago from September 7-9. The other guests invited to the event, held once in four years, include RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath, Hollywood star Richard Gere and Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard.

The other participants in the economic conference include SpiceJet chairman Ajay Singh, Piramal Group chairman Ajay Piramal and KPMG India chairman Arun Kumar.
