The Modern Spirit of Yazeed: From the Tragedy of Karbala to the Targeted Slaughter of Dr. Kamal Kharrazi

It was captured during a Nowruz celebration at the United Nations in the mid-1990s, a time when he served with distinction as Iran’s Permanent
Representative. My mind has always held onto how incredibly kind, gentle, and humble he was when we met. Learning of his tragic passing in Tehran deeply saddens me.
Dr. Kharrazi, who went on to serve as Iran’s foreign minister and head the Strategic Council on Foreign Relations, succumbed to injuries sustained when a joint U.S.-Israeli airstrike decimated his Tehran residence.

The attack did not just claim a seasoned diplomat; it immediately killed his late wife and added another dark chapter to an unyielding cycle of state-sponsored violence.
As a Shia Muslim, my heart naturally ties this modern sorrow to our deep, ongoing mourning for the tragedy of Karbala. Centuries later, we still weep for the Holy Prophet’s grandchildren and the 72 innocent souls—including a six-month-old infant—who did nothing wrong, yet were surrounded and brutally butchered by the tyrant Yazeed.

The grim reality of the 21st century is that the tyrannical spirit of Yazeed is not a relic of Islamic history. It remains alive and active in the corridors of modern power. We see it clearly in the cold, calculated policy decisions that authorize the targeted slaughter and senseless destruction of civilian lives.
When political figures like Benjamin Netanyahu deploy devastating military operations resulting in thousands of deaths, or leaders like Donald Trump push aggressive, unilateral maneuvers that compromise regional stability, they mimic that ancient, destructive arrogance. War changes nothing. It does not yield justice, nor does it secure democratic principles. It only destroys families, shatters peace, and kills good people while leaving a trail of orphaned children and pulverized cities.

The international community must stop shielding those who make these fatal, aggressive calculations. True global peace cannot be built on impunity; it requires international accountability and legal punishment for any leader—regardless of their geopolitical backing—who signs off on actions that slaughter innocent men, women, and children.
Dr. Kharrazi and his late wife are in my prayers. May the oppressors finally face true justice, and may humanity collectively choose the courageous path of peace over the cruel, short-sighted metrics of conflict.
