By Adam Rizvi | Editor, The India Observer (TIO): SAN FRANCISCO, CA — In a significant development at its recent convention in San Francisco, the California Democratic Party (CADEM) adopted new platform language affirming Palestinian human rights, addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the West Bank, and expressing support for an independent Palestinian state.
The updated language, approved on February 22, 2026, was incorporated into the party’s World Peace & International Affairs plank. It includes eight key provisions focused on the ongoing crisis in Gaza and the broader Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

According to a statement from CAIR Action, the platform language calls for:
- A full and permanent ceasefire
-
Immediate humanitarian relief and rebuilding efforts
-
Accountability for violations of international law
-
Restoration of funding for UNRWA
-
Condemnation of settler violence in the West Bank
-
Renewed diplomatic efforts toward a just and lasting resolution recognizing Palestinian sovereignty and dignity
The language also advocates for diplomatic measures to prevent war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide. It calls for an immediate end to mass civilian casualties and displacement in Gaza and affirms the right of Palestinians to independence, sovereignty, and dignity.
In addition, the platform recognizes that Palestinians in Gaza must be able to rebuild without forced displacement, and that Palestinians in the West Bank should live free from the threat of settler violence and expanding settlements. It emphasizes that negotiations must lead to peace, security, and democratic self-determination for both Palestinians and Israelis.

“This moment represents an important step toward truth, accountability, and justice,” said Basim Elkarra, Executive Director of CAIR Action. He noted that while platform changes alone will not end the violence or humanitarian crisis, they signal that grassroots Democratic leaders are increasingly acknowledging realities on the ground and advocating policies rooted in human rights and international law.
Mirvette Judeh, Chair of the California Democratic Party Arab American Caucus and Co-Chair of California Democrats for Justice in Palestine, played a central role in advancing and negotiating the platform language.
“Getting these eight paragraphs into the platform required difficult conversations and real collaboration,” Judeh said. “People with different perspectives came together in the name of humanity. This moment acknowledges the suffering of Palestinians and affirms their human rights, while laying the groundwork for greater unity in our party to pursue lasting peace and justice.”
Judeh expressed gratitude to party leaders, caucuses, platform committee members, and delegates who supported the initiative. She emphasized that sustained dialogue across differing viewpoints was essential in reaching consensus.
CAIR Action stated that the adoption of the language reflects growing momentum within Democratic grassroots leadership to align party values with international law, human rights principles, and a just and lasting peace framework.
“Moments like this remind us that progress is possible when people choose courage and conscience,” Judeh added. “This historic step reflects a growing recognition that lasting peace requires justice, dignity, and freedom for Palestinians as well as security for Israelis.”
Judeh indicated she will continue working with grassroots advocates, party leaders, and elected officials to translate these platform values into policy and ensure U.S. leadership reflects principles of human rights, accountability, and peace.
