By Adam Rizvi | Editor, The India Observer (TIO): TRENTON, NJ — New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill issued a sharp statement on Monday condemning the federal administration’s refusal to continue funding the Gateway Tunnel Project, warning that the decision threatens tens of thousands of jobs, billions in economic activity, and the daily commutes of residents across the region.

Governor Sherrill described the funding halt as an unlawful and reckless move that directly targets New Jersey’s economic stability and working families who rely on safe, reliable transportation infrastructure.

“The president’s refusal to fund the Gateway Tunnel project is not only an illegal attack on New Jersey but also shows a reckless disregard for our economy and the livelihoods of working families,” Sherrill said. She emphasized that New Jersey and New York together represent the most economically powerful region in the world, making the Gateway Tunnel the most urgent and consequential infrastructure project in the nation.

The Gateway Tunnel Project, which would modernize and expand rail capacity under the Hudson River, is widely viewed as critical to preventing future transit disruptions and supporting long-term regional growth. Sherrill noted that if federal funding is not restored, the consequences would be severe.

“If the president does not restore funding to this project, which I helped secure while serving in Congress, he will single-handedly kill nearly 100,000 jobs and $20 billion in economic activity,” she warned.

The governor reaffirmed New Jersey’s commitment to defending the project and the federal tax dollars contributed by its residents. “New Jersey will fight tooth and nail for our hard-earned tax dollars and this essential project that will make commutes easier and improve quality of life for residents in the Garden State,” Sherrill added.

Transportation experts and regional leaders have long cautioned that delays or cancellations of the Gateway Tunnel could cripple the Northeast Corridor, one of the busiest rail routes in the country, with ripple effects across commerce, housing, and workforce mobility.
