Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill Announces Jennifer Davenport as Attorney General Nominee

By The India Observer News Desk, Edited by Adam Rizvi, The India Observer, TIO: Newark, NJ | December 2025: Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill today announced Jennifer Davenport as her nominee to serve as the next Attorney General of New Jersey, selecting a seasoned law enforcement professional with more than 15 years of state and federal experience and a long record of public service.

Davenport, a lifelong New Jersey resident, has built a career centered on upholding the rule of law, protecting communities, and working collaboratively with law enforcement agencies and residents alike. Her nomination signals the Sherrill administration’s focus on public safety, accountability, and affordability across the Garden State.

“A strong Attorney General is critical to delivering for New Jerseyans — whether that means taking on price gougers, fighting for federal resources, or protecting our rights and freedoms,” Governor-elect Sherrill said. “That’s why I’m excited to announce Jennifer Davenport as my Attorney General nominee.”

Sherrill noted that she worked closely with Davenport during her tenure at the U.S. Attorney’s Office and praised her deep commitment to the Constitution and public service.

“Equally as powerful is her dedication to working hand-in-hand with the communities she served so residents felt safe and supported,” Sherrill added. “Jen’s ability to work with anyone and everyone, combined with her decade and a half of experience handling complex civil and criminal cases, will be essential as we work to build a more affordable New Jersey. As a lifelong New Jerseyan, I know she will never back down from a fight.”

Commitment to Public Safety and Affordability

In accepting the nomination, Davenport emphasized her alignment with Governor-elect Sherrill’s priorities of safety, affordability, and defending New Jersey’s interests.

“I am deeply grateful to Governor-elect Sherrill for nominating me to serve as Attorney General,” Davenport said. “The Attorney General’s Office plays a critical role in advancing the Governor-elect’s mission of keeping residents safe and making our state more affordable, and I share that commitment.”

Davenport said her career has been shaped by collaboration and problem-solving, from combating gun violence and human trafficking to protecting children and defending New Jersey residents from federal actions that threaten state interests.

“I have spent my career in public service and alongside law enforcement, bringing people together to tackle the toughest challenges facing our state,” she said. “If confirmed, I will draw on that experience every day to protect New Jerseyans.”

Extensive Legal and Law Enforcement Background

Jennifer Davenport brings a broad and distinguished résumé to the role. She previously served four years in senior leadership positions at the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office, including First Assistant Attorney General and Principal Law Enforcement Advisor.

She also served as New Jersey’s Commissioner on the Waterfront Commission, where she worked to combat corruption in the New York–New Jersey harbor region.

After leaving the Attorney General’s Office in 2022, Davenport joined PSEG, serving as Senior Director of Compliance and later as Deputy General Counsel and Chief Litigation Counsel.

Earlier in her career, Davenport served as Division Counsel to the New Jersey Division of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and spent seven years as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the District of New Jersey, where she led the General Crimes Unit.

Her private-sector experience includes work as a litigation associate at Latham & Watkins and Patton Boggs in Newark. She also clerked for Chief Judge John W. Bissell of the U.S. District Court in Newark. Before and during law school, Davenport worked as an intelligence analyst with the DEA.

She is a graduate of DeSales University and Seton Hall University School of Law, and is the mother of two daughters.
