Sherrill: “Jack Stands with Trump — I Stand with New Jersey.”
BLOOMFIELD — Mikie Sherrill released a statement today following her victory in what has been called the most competitive Democratic gubernatorial primary in New Jersey’s history:
“Tonight, New Jersey sent a clear message: we’re ready to forge a new direction, and I’m deeply honored to be chosen as the Democratic nominee for governor. It’s time to bring a new era of leadership to Trenton. My background — from serving as a Navy helicopter pilot for nearly a decade, to working as a federal prosecutor, to representing our state in Congress, all while raising four children here — has prepared me to lead from day one.”
She continued, “This election offers a stark choice between two paths. I’m prepared to stand up to the far-right agenda in Washington that disregards New Jersey’s needs — while Jack Ciattarelli has already embraced it. Our state’s motto is ‘Liberty and Prosperity,’ and we must defend it. Electing a Trump loyalist like Jack would put everything at risk.”
“Jack may stand with Trump, but I stand with New Jersey,” Sherrill declared. “A New Jersey where young people can afford to stay, families can buy homes, and seniors can live with dignity. A state that leads on clean energy and drives down utility costs. A state where women’s reproductive rights are protected, and where we uphold the rule of law and the Constitution.”
Reflecting on her commitment to service, Sherrill said, “From the moment I took my first oath at the U.S. Naval Academy, I’ve lived by the motto: Ship, Shipmate, Self. That order of priorities has guided me throughout my career. This campaign was built on the same principle — putting New Jersey first. And that’s how we’ll defend our state from the dysfunction coming out of Trump’s Washington.”

The Democratic primary featured six contenders, including three current mayors, a sitting member of Congress, and a former state Senate president — making it the most contested gubernatorial primary in state history. Despite entering the race later than her opponents and without the advantage of an organizational party line, Sherrill stood out in a crowded field. While her rivals spent a combined $40 million on advertising before she launched her first ad, Sherrill ultimately overcame being outspent more than six-to-one, including expenditures from outside groups.
Her campaign was driven by grassroots momentum. Nearly 2,000 volunteers reached voters by knocking on 120,000 doors, placing 200,000 phone calls, and sending over 500,000 text messages. Sherrill earned endorsements from a wide range of organizations, including the Sierra Club, League of Conservation Voters, Chatham Moms for Change, Door to Door Democracy, the New Jersey Firefighters Mutual Benevolent Association, and the Laborers’ International Union of North America.
Throughout the race, Sherrill distinguished herself by presenting substantive policy proposals. Her Affordability Agenda focused on reducing costs for New Jersey families, and her Online Safety Agenda positioned the state as a leader in regulating tech to protect children and democracy. Former Representative Tom Malinowski praised it as “the most comprehensive” plan of its kind in the nation.
