Shabana Azmi nominated Global Leadership Ambassador. Project funded by Hillary Clinton
Mumbai, May7: Veteran actress and social activist Shabana Azmi has been nominated as the Global Leadership Ambassador for Women in Public Service Project (WPSP), a Hillary Clinton-founded programme aimed at empowering the next generation of women around the world.
According to the official WPSP website, WPSP is an innovative initiative to advance women to positions of influence in governments and civic organizations worldwide, and was founded by Clinton in partnership with the US Department of State and the Seven Sister Colleges of Barnard College, Bryn Mawr College, Mount Holyoke College, Smith College and Wellesley College.
Speaking to TIO’s Bureau Chief in an exclusivetelephonic interview Shabana Azmi said, “You and I know that women leaders can change the world. When women have a seat at the table, they lend their own unique perspectives to policy decisions that impact their daily lives and the lives of their communities.”
“We know the world needs women leaders. Now it is time for action, she added.
Speaking on the nomination, the veteran Actor and social activist said, “I am honoured to be nominated as Global Leader Ambassador of Women in Public Service Project. The Project’s goal of “50 by 50” is an important mission that can only be achieved if all of us step up to enable and empower more women to lead.”
A staunch advocator of Women’s Rights, she averred, “Representation is more than numbers alone: in order to reach true gender equality, we must also take into account where women are present or absent in decision-making. This is why the Women in Public Service Project’s work building the data and evidence base for women’s leadership is so critical. The numbers show us where we are today, and how we can get to the ultimate goal of gender parity in policy and political leadership around the world.”
In conclusion she added, “I commend the Women in Public Service Project for innovating the global effort toward gender parity and revealing new paths to achieving this goal.”
