By Adam Rizvi | Editor, The India Observer (TIO): WINCHESTER, Mass. — The growing political influence of the Indian American diaspora was on full display this week as community leaders, business owners, professionals, and young voters gathered in Winchester, Massachusetts, for a high-energy meet-and-greet and fundraiser in support of Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi’s campaign for the United States Senate.
The event, hosted by Ramesh Viswanath Kapur along with Vikram Rajadhyashka, Nar Koppula, Shirish Nimgaonkar, Dr. Anahita Dua, Dr. Suhas Desai, Dr. Lakshmi Thalanki, Prabhu Rao, Dr. Megha Joshi, and Priya Samant, successfully raised $50,000, signaling strong and expanding national momentum behind Krishnamoorthi’s historic Senate run.

Community leaders and supporters traveled from Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Ohio, reflecting a unified Indian American voice rallying behind a candidate whose personal journey mirrors the aspirations of millions of immigrant families across the United States.
Born in India, Congressman Krishnamoorthi immigrated to the United States as a child. His family spent part of his early years in Buffalo, New York, living in public housing and briefly relying on food assistance before eventually settling in Peoria, Illinois—a community that helped shape his values of perseverance, gratitude, and public service.
A lawyer by training, Krishnamoorthi began his career fighting corruption and promoting public accountability, focusing on protecting taxpayer interests and strengthening ethical governance. He later spent seven years running a small business, gaining firsthand experience with the challenges faced by entrepreneurs and working families.

Elected in 2016 to represent Illinois’ 8th Congressional District, one of the nation’s most vibrant South Asian communities, Krishnamoorthi has since been reelected five times. In Congress, he has earned bipartisan respect for his leadership on consumer protection, national security, economic opportunity, and government accountability.
With Senator Dick Durbin announcing he will not seek reelection, Krishnamoorthi is now pursuing the U.S. Senate seat—aiming not only to serve Illinois, but also to become the first U.S. Senator of Indian origin, breaking what supporters describe as the “brown ceiling” in American politics.
