By Adam Rizvi | Editor, The India Observer (TIO): New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill issued a strong statement on February 16 addressing recent criticism from former President Donald Trump regarding the Gateway Tunnel infrastructure project.
Governor Sherrill defended the progress and management of the Gateway initiative, describing it as one of the most urgent infrastructure projects in the United States. She asserted that the project had remained on schedule and within budget prior to federal actions that temporarily disrupted work.
In her statement, Governor Sherrill said the only way the project could become a “boondoggle” would be through political interference. She further alleged that prior federal decisions forced construction shutdowns, displaced workers, and threatened the daily commutes of approximately 200,000 riders who depend on the corridor.
The Governor emphasized that New Jersey would continue legal efforts to ensure the federal government meets its funding commitments. She stated that her administration will pursue the matter in court, expressing confidence that full project funding will ultimately be secured.
Court Blocks Trump Administration Funding Freeze, Allowing Gateway Tunnel Project to Move Forward
The Gateway Tunnel project is widely regarded by transportation experts as critical to modernizing aging rail infrastructure connecting New Jersey and New York, supporting both regional commuters and interstate commerce.
The Gateway Program is intended to replace and expand rail tunnels beneath the Hudson River, which are more than a century old and were significantly damaged during Superstorm Sandy. Infrastructure advocates argue that failure to complete the project could lead to major service disruptions, economic losses, and long-term regional instability.
New Jersey officials maintain that consistent federal support is essential to ensuring the project’s completion without additional delays.

Editorial Perspective
As Editor of The India Observer, I believe infrastructure development should remain above partisan politics. Major transportation projects impact working families, small businesses, and the broader economy. Regardless of party lines, stability, transparency, and accountability must guide public investment decisions.
