By Adam Rizvi | Editor, The India Observer (TIO): TRENTON, NJ — Mikie Sherrill on Monday recommended that the New Jersey Turnpike Authority Board advance the $6.7 billion Newark Bay Bridge program — a historic infrastructure investment aimed at improving safety, long-term reliability, and economic growth across the region.

In a formal statement dated March 3, 2026, Governor Sherrill described the initiative as the largest single project ever advanced by the Turnpike Authority. The proposal includes the immediate construction of a new four-lane bridge with shoulders and associated safety improvements.

According to the Governor’s office, the program is expected to support approximately 19,000 jobs, including thousands of union construction positions. It is also projected to generate significant regional economic activity and create opportunities for small and minority-owned businesses across New Jersey.

“This historic investment in safety, resilience, and job creation will improve long-term reliability for drivers and freight,” Governor Sherrill stated.

A key component of the plan involves shifting traffic off the aging existing Newark Bay Bridge structure by 2031, aligning with prior safety concerns raised by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

Additionally, the Governor recommended that the Turnpike Authority continue advancing design and permitting work for roadway structures leading to the Holland Tunnel strictly for safety improvements — without expanding traffic capacity. This distinction may address concerns from environmental and community advocates who have previously voiced opposition to widening projects.

Governor Sherrill further recommended requiring Project Labor Agreements (PLAs) for the program to ensure high safety standards, quality workmanship, and the use of a highly skilled, diverse union workforce.

“I am grateful for the input I have received from mayors, community leaders, and organized labor,” the Governor said. “I look forward to this historic, job-creating project that will grow our economy and improve commutes for the people of New Jersey.”

If approved by the Turnpike Authority Board, the Newark Bay Bridge program would represent one of the most significant infrastructure undertakings in modern New Jersey history, with long-term implications for regional transportation, freight movement, and economic competitiveness.
