By The India Observer Staff, Edited and published by Adam Rizvi, The India Observer, TIO: TRENTON, NJ — Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill on Thursday issued a statement following congressional approval of the Fiscal Year 2026 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), emphasizing its importance for New Jersey’s defense infrastructure, military families, and national security priorities.

Drawing on her experience serving on the U.S. House Armed Services Committee, Sherrill underscored the bipartisan nature of the annual defense bill and its role in supporting service members while strengthening America’s strategic interests at home and abroad.

“Each year while serving on the House Armed Services Committee, I worked to craft a bipartisan National Defense Authorization Act that protected service members and their families, invested in New Jersey’s defense infrastructure, and upheld American interests around the world,” Sherrill said. “As Governor, I look forward to continuing that mission in partnership with our state’s congressional delegation to maintain New Jersey’s position as a national leader in defense and security.”

Governor-elect Sherrill highlighted provisions in the FY2026 NDAA that directly benefit New Jersey, including bipartisan efforts to protect the mission at Picatinny Arsenal and increased resources for defense installations across the state.

“This year’s NDAA makes important investments that will benefit New Jersey,” she said. “I am particularly pleased with the bipartisan efforts from New Jersey’s congressional delegation to protect the mission at Picatinny Arsenal and direct additional resources to defense installations, service members, and military families across the Garden State.”

She also noted that the legislation includes broader national security measures, such as provisions supporting U.S. allies, reinforcing constitutional safeguards, and strengthening protections for those in uniform.

However, Sherrill expressed disappointment that certain protections for service members were again left out of the final bill.

“While I am deeply disappointed that once again provisions to protect service members’ rights and freedoms — including access to reproductive healthcare — were not included, I remain committed to fighting for the safety and well-being of those who proudly serve our nation,” she added.
