By TIO Bureau | Edited by The India Observer News Desk, TIO: TRENTON, NJ (Nov. 24, 2025) — New Jersey Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill issued a sharp rebuke of the Trump Administration following what she described as an unjustified attack on U.S. Senator Mark Kelly, a Navy veteran, former astronaut, and New Jersey native.
In a statement released Monday, Sherrill condemned the Defense Department’s move against Kelly, calling it “another abuse of power by the most incompetent and unfit Secretary of Defense in our nation’s history.”
Sherrill emphasized Kelly’s distinguished service record, both in combat missions and as a NASA astronaut. She further criticized Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth for targeting Kelly over remarks asserting that members of the military must uphold the law and the Constitution.

“Sen. Mark Kelly – a New Jersey native and fellow U.S. Navy veteran – has served our country with distinction, both in combat and space missions. Now, Hegseth wants to prosecute him for stating unequivocally that service members must follow the law and the Constitution – a reminder that Hegseth himself should heed,” Sherrill said.
The dispute reflects rising tensions between the incoming Sherrill administration and federal leadership as she prepares to take office. Kelly, widely respected across military and scientific communities, has not issued a detailed response, but allies nationwide have rallied to defend the senator amid concerns over political retaliation.
