By TIO Bureau, Edited by Adam Rizvi, The India Observer: TRENTON, NJ (Dec. 5, 2025) — Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill issued a forceful statement Friday condemning U.S. Secretary of Education Lisa McMahon’s planned visit to New Jersey, calling it a partisan attempt to influence public schools and undermine the state’s educational values.
The Secretary’s tour, branded as the “History Rocks!” initiative, has drawn sharp criticism from educators and civic groups for requiring mandatory school assemblies sponsored by far-right organizations. Sherrill said the visit appears aimed at advancing an “extreme MAGA agenda” rather than celebrating American history.

“New Jersey has an important role to play celebrating the nation’s 250th and I look forward to embracing that opportunity as governor. It’s clear, however, that Sec. McMahon’s so-called ‘History Rocks!’ visit does not intend to celebrate the values of our country and Constitution; instead, it politicizes New Jersey public schools with a mandatory school assembly sponsored by far-right organizations that promote an extreme MAGA agenda. It is entirely inappropriate, violates parents’ rights, and our kids deserve better,” Sherrill said.
She added that the Secretary of Education should focus on strengthening public schools, not “defunding them, diverting tax dollars, or jeopardizing children’s futures.”

Sherrill’s remarks come as communities across the state prepare for programs related to America’s 250th anniversary — an effort she says must uphold shared national values rather than partisan ideology.
More updates will follow as reactions emerge from school districts, parent groups, and state legislative leaders.
