By Adam Rizvi | Editor, The India Observer (TIO): VIRGINIA — March 17, 2026: A newly released poll by CAIR Action indicates that U.S. policy toward Gaza and military aid to Israel is emerging as a decisive issue for voters in Virginia’s 6th Congressional District Democratic primary.

According to the survey conducted by Molitico between February 18–22, 2026, among 1,031 likely Democratic primary voters, a significant majority expressed strong views on the ongoing Gaza conflict.

The findings show that:

  • 84.83% of respondents agreed that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza
  • 85.58% supported stopping U.S. weapons transfers to Israel

These results suggest a notable shift in voter priorities, with foreign policy—particularly the situation in Gaza—playing a more prominent role in shaping electoral decisions. Analysts note that issues once considered peripheral in congressional races are increasingly influencing primary contests across the United States.

The poll also examined candidate support, highlighting changes after voters were provided with additional information about their backgrounds and policy positions.

Former Congressman Tom Perriello initially led with 34.38%, followed by Virginia State Delegate Sam Rasoul at 15.47%.

However, after voters received more detailed candidate information:

  • Perriello’s support increased to 37.40%
  • Rasoul’s support rose significantly to 27.77%, marking the largest gain among candidates

The data suggests that informed voters may shift preferences based on candidates’ policy positions, including their stance on international issues such as Gaza and U.S. military aid.

Speaking on the findings, Basim Elkarra stated that voters increasingly view the issue through both moral and political lenses, emphasizing accountability and clarity in candidate positions.

Observers say the poll reflects a broader national trend where debates surrounding Gaza and U.S. foreign policy are becoming more visible in domestic electoral politics, particularly within Democratic primaries.

The survey included 1,031 likely Democratic primary voters in Virginia’s 6th Congressional District and carries a margin of error of ±3%. Respondents were asked about their candidate preferences both before and after receiving additional information about the candidates.

Editorial Note

At a time when global conflicts increasingly intersect with domestic politics, this poll underscores how deeply international issues can resonate at the local level. For many voters, the Gaza crisis is not just a distant geopolitical matter—it is shaping perceptions of leadership, accountability, and moral responsibility. As democratic engagement evolves, candidates across the political spectrum may need to address these concerns with clarity, balance, and respect for diverse perspectives.
