Governor Mikie Sherrill Announces $1.2 Million Grant for Phillipsburg Sinkhole Repairs, NJDOT Steps In to Restore Safety

By Adam Rizvi | Editor, The India Observer (TIO): TRENTON, NJ — Mikie Sherrill has announced a $1.2 million infrastructure grant to support emergency repairs in Phillipsburg following a dangerous sinkhole incident that disrupted a key local roadway and displaced residents.
The funding, issued through the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT), will help restore Summit Avenue, which was severely damaged after sinkholes developed at the intersection with Lewis Street in February.
“This is what government does — bringing resources to an area where we need to make people whole after an unexpected calamity,” Governor Sherrill said in an official statement. “We are providing $1.2 million to ensure a permanent fix so residents can safely return to their homes and daily lives.”
According to NJDOT Acting Commissioner Priya Jain, the incident underscores the importance of rapid response and strong inter-agency coordination when public safety is at risk.
“When unforeseen events threaten communities, NJDOT works swiftly with local partners to restore safe access for motorists, residents, and businesses,” Jain stated. “No community should face unexpected infrastructure challenges alone.”

Preliminary findings suggest the sinkholes may have been caused by aging underground infrastructure and a potential pipe collapse, though investigations are ongoing.
The sinkholes, first reported on February 16, caused significant structural concerns in the surrounding area. At least eight homes were deemed unsafe, forcing residents to evacuate.
Temporary roadway repairs have already been completed, while Aqua New Jersey is actively working to repair the damaged water main. Further geotechnical investigations will determine the long-term safety of the area before residents can return.

Once safety is confirmed, full reconstruction efforts will begin, including repaving the roadway and restoring sidewalks.
State and local officials, including Phillipsburg Mayor Randy Piazza Jr., State Senator Doug Steinhardt, and Assemblyman John DiMaio, joined the Governor and NJDOT leadership in addressing the situation, highlighting a coordinated response to the emergency.
The grant reflects New Jersey’s continued investment in local infrastructure through NJDOT’s Local Aid program, ensuring municipalities have access to critical funding during emergencies.
