By Adam Rizvi | Editor, The India Observer (TIO): TRENTON, NJ — Governor Mikie Sherrill continued advancing her administration’s “Save You Time & Money” agenda this week, spotlighting reforms aimed at cutting red tape and modernizing state government during a visit to Advanced Solar Products in Flemington.

The Governor was joined by Tom Bracken, President and CEO of the New Jersey Chamber of Commerce, and Chris Emigholz of the New Jersey Business & Industry Association, where she met with solar entrepreneur Lyle Rawlings to discuss real-world permitting challenges facing small and mid-sized businesses.

Governor Sherrill emphasized that small businesses remain central to job creation, innovation, and community stability across New Jersey. She stated that government should function as a partner — not a barrier — to economic growth.

“State government should work for our business community,” Governor Sherrill said. “We are modernizing outdated systems and accelerating permitting and regulatory processes so businesses can focus on growth instead of paperwork.”

According to the Governor’s Office, several major steps are already in progress:

  • All state agencies have been directed to complete a detailed catalog of permits and approvals by April 20, 2026. This review aims to identify outdated, duplicative, or unnecessary requirements and align reforms under Executive Order 5.
  •  Cross-Agency Regulatory Review
  • Leadership teams at the New Jersey Department of Transportation, New Jersey Department of Community Affairs, and New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection have begun in-depth permitting evaluations to improve coordination and reduce administrative delays.
  • In partnership with the New Jersey Innovation Authority, the administration is developing a real-time digital dashboard allowing applicants to track permit progress, identify bottlenecks, and increase transparency. A pilot program is expected before broader statewide implementation.

Tom Bracken of the New Jersey Chamber of Commerce described the administration’s outreach as a meaningful shift in tone and engagement.

He praised the collaborative approach taken by Governor Sherrill, Lieutenant Governor Dale Caldwell, and Chief Operating Officer Kellie Doucette, calling it “a welcome change” that signals stronger partnership between government and industry.

Business leaders have long advocated for predictable timelines, clearer regulatory pathways, and greater accountability within permitting processes — issues the administration says it is now directly addressing.

On her first day in office, Governor Sherrill signed executive orders designed to introduce transparency, enforceable timelines, and cross-agency accountability into the state’s regulatory framework.

To maintain momentum, the Governor also announced plans for a 21-county listening tour alongside Lieutenant Governor Caldwell and senior staff to meet with business leaders and residents across New Jersey. The goal is to hear directly from stakeholders about improving efficiency and reducing costs statewide.

Further details about the tour are expected in the coming weeks.

New Jersey has historically faced criticism from business groups regarding regulatory delays and complex permitting structures. By focusing on modernization and inter-agency coordination, the Sherrill Administration aims to strengthen economic competitiveness while preserving environmental and community safeguards.

The reforms — if fully implemented — could significantly impact small businesses, renewable energy developers, construction firms, and entrepreneurs statewide.
