By Adam Rizvi | Editor, The India Observer (TIO): MIDDLESEX COUNTY, NJ — The Middlesex County Board of County Commissioners formally launched the 2026 governing year during its annual Swearing-In Ceremony and Reorganization Meeting on Wednesday, January 7, at the Middlesex College Performing Arts Center. The event highlighted the County’s achievements in 2025 while laying out an ambitious roadmap for continued economic growth, infrastructure development, and community investment in the year ahead.

The ceremony drew an audience of federal, state, and local leaders, including Governor Phil Murphy, Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill, and Assembly Speaker Craig J. Coughlin, alongside municipal officials, community leaders, and residents from across the County.

During the program, Commissioners Claribel A. Azcona-Barber, Charles Kenny, and Chanelle Scott McCullum were sworn in following their re-elections. Constitutional officers County Clerk Nancy J. Pinkin and Sheriff Mildred S. Scott were also sworn in for new terms of service.

Following the oath ceremonies, the Board unanimously re-elected Commissioner Ronald G. Rios as Director of the Board and Commissioner Shanti Narra as Deputy Director, reaffirming continuity in County leadership.

In his keynote address, Director Rios reflected on what he described as a transformative year driven by long-term planning and responsible fiscal stewardship.

“Our Board has a clear vision, anchored by a strong financial foundation and a steadfast commitment to delivering high-quality services to our residents,” Rios said. “To grow our economy and remain sustainable for generations, we made deliberate investments in infrastructure and in our communities.”

Governor Phil Murphy congratulated the newly sworn-in officials and commended the Board’s collaborative approach.

“Serving our communities is a privilege,” Murphy said. “I know this Board will continue strengthening opportunities and growing the economy for Middlesex County through dedication, compassion, and meaningful leadership.”

Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill echoed that message, noting the importance of local leadership during a time of statewide challenges.

“I commend these public servants for stepping up to serve their communities,” Sherrill said. “I look forward to working closely with Middlesex County’s leadership as we deliver for residents.”

Assembly Speaker Craig J. Coughlin praised the County’s forward-looking strategy, calling it a model for the rest of New Jersey.

“Middlesex County shows what is possible when every level of government pulls in the same direction,” Coughlin said. “By strengthening communities and expanding opportunity, the County continues to set the pace statewide.”

Looking ahead to 2026, Director Rios emphasized that Middlesex County is entering a pivotal phase marked by the opening of new facilities and the acceleration of major infrastructure projects.

Central to this momentum is the County’s Community, Innovation, and Opportunity (CIO) Strategic Investment Plan, which is reshaping the Middlesex College campus into a regional destination for education, recreation, arts, and civic engagement. Projects currently under construction include the Middlesex County Innovation Magnet School, a multipurpose community venue, a new Middlesex College Student Center, and the Destination Athletic Complex at Thomas A. Edison Park, with openings expected in late 2026.

The County also highlighted progress on several landmark initiatives, including the opening of the Jack & Sheryl Morris Cancer Center in 2025, ongoing construction of the New Jersey Health Life Science Exchange (HELIX), and modernization of the New Brunswick Train Station to enhance safety, accessibility, and connectivity.

With continued fiscal stability — including another AAA bond rating — Middlesex County officials reiterated their commitment to strategic investments in education, transportation, sustainability, arts, and technology. Initiatives include new artificial-intelligence learning pathways and development of a clean-energy microgrid designed to power the Middlesex College campus.

Closing the program, Director Rios thanked County employees, volunteers, and community partners for their contributions to the County’s progress.

“We are an economic powerhouse in New Jersey and a destination of choice in the Northeast,” Rios said. “We’re shaping a future full of opportunity, and the best is yet to come for Middlesex County.”

Middlesex County’s reorganization meeting reflected more than a procedural transition — it underscored how consistent leadership, fiscal discipline, and long-term planning can translate into real opportunities for residents. At a time when public trust matters deeply, such civic continuity offers a measure of confidence and stability.
