Governor Sherrill Nominates Kevin Jarvis to Serve as Labor Commissioner

By Adam Rizvi | Editor, The India Observer (TIO):TRENTON, NJ — Governor Mikie Sherrill has nominated veteran labor attorney and public servant Kevin Jarvis to serve as the next Commissioner of the New Jersey  Department of Labor and Workforce Development, a role central to workforce training, worker protections, and economic mobility across the state.

If confirmed by the State Senate, Jarvis will oversee initiatives aimed at expanding access to workforce development programs, strengthening partnerships between higher education and businesses, improving the efficiency of labor-related government services, and increasing career opportunities for individuals with disabilities. The department also plays a key role in enforcing worker protections and labor standards statewide.

Announcing the nomination, Governor Sherrill praised Jarvis’s extensive background in labor advocacy and public administration. She said his experience defending workers’ rights and navigating complex labor issues makes him well suited to lead one of the state’s most critical agencies as New Jersey adapts to a changing economy.

Jarvis expressed gratitude for the nomination and emphasized the importance of preparing New Jersey’s workforce for evolving industries and employment demands. He noted that the state’s position as a hub of innovation requires coordinated efforts to ensure workers are equipped with the skills needed to succeed.

Jarvis brings a blend of legal, policy, and administrative experience to the role. He previously practiced labor law as a partner at O’Brien, Belland & Bushinsky, handling matters ranging from contract negotiations and arbitration to unfair labor practice cases and ERISA litigation.

Earlier in his career, Jarvis served nearly four years as Chief of Staff at the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development, giving him direct operational experience within the agency he is now poised to lead. He has also represented hundreds of workers in litigation related to workplace injuries and exposure to hazardous substances, including asbestos and diesel exhaust.

Jarvis earned a Bachelor of Arts in History and English from Rutgers University and a Juris Doctor from Seton Hall University School of Law.

The leadership of the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development directly affects job training, workplace safety, unemployment benefits, and worker protections for millions of residents. The confirmation of a new commissioner will shape how the state responds to workforce shortages, economic transitions, and labor rights in the years ahead.
