By Adam Rizvi, The India Observer, TIO: New Jersey is home to one of the fastest-growing South Asian populations in the United States. From Edison to Jersey City, from Parsippany to Iselin, Indian and Pakistani families have built vibrant communities that are now an essential part of the state’s cultural, social, and political fabric. With thousands of small businesses, active places of worship, and civic organizations, South Asians are no longer just contributors to New Jersey’s economy — they are also a powerful voting bloc with the ability to shape the outcome of statewide elections.

This November, as voters head to the polls to choose their next governor, the South Asian community is increasingly uniting behind Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill. The momentum is real, and the reasons are clear.

Mikie Sherrill’s Connection to the Community

Mikie Sherrill’s public service career is rooted in values of integrity, accessibility, and respect. A former Navy helicopter pilot and federal prosecutor, she has consistently shown that leadership is about listening and bringing people together. These qualities have not gone unnoticed in the South Asian community.

In my own experience as a journalist, I have met Mikie on several occasions. Each time, I was struck by her humility, warmth, and genuine ability to connect with people. She greets community members not with the distance of a politician, but with the sincerity of a neighbor. That kind of accessibility is rare in politics — and it resonates deeply with Indian and Pakistani families who prize humility, sincerity, and personal connection.

Shared Values and Common Priorities

South Asian families in New Jersey, whether first-generation immigrants or second-generation professionals, share a set of values that align closely with Mikie Sherrill’s vision for the state.

  • Education: South Asians place great emphasis on quality education, and Mikie has been a champion of strengthening New Jersey’s public schools.

  • Family and Opportunity: Like many immigrant families, South Asians work hard to ensure a better future for their children. Mikie’s policies on healthcare, affordability, and economic growth speak directly to these aspirations.

  • Small Business Growth: From restaurants and grocery stores to IT firms and medical practices, South Asian-owned businesses are vital to local economies. Mikie has consistently advocated for policies that support entrepreneurship and reduce barriers for small business owners.

In short, her agenda reflects the priorities of New Jersey’s South Asian voters: strong schools, safe neighborhoods, affordable healthcare, and an economy that works for everyone.

The Power of the South Asian Vote

According to recent demographic studies, South Asians make up one of the fastest-growing voter blocs in New Jersey. In towns like Edison, Woodbridge, and Jersey City, their votes can tip the balance in tight races. Across the state, Indian and Pakistani Americans are doctors, engineers, teachers, small business owners, taxi drivers, IT professionals, and homemakers — a diverse but united community with shared aspirations.

Their participation in elections is steadily increasing. This year, with so much at stake, the community’s role could be decisive.

Momentum on the Ground

The enthusiasm for Mikie Sherrill is already visible. Community leaders are discussing her candidacy at gatherings. WhatsApp groups are filled with conversations urging people to vote. South Asian families are attending campaign events in greater numbers. Volunteers are stepping up to spread her message.

A Call to Action

As we look ahead to November 4th, one thing is clear: the South Asian community is ready to play a defining role in New Jersey’s future. Our votes matter, our voices matter, and our engagement can make the difference in electing a governor who truly represents us.

Mikie Sherrill is not just another candidate. She is a leader who has earned the trust of South Asian families through her humility, integrity, and vision for a stronger, fairer New Jersey.
