ICYMI: Mikie Sherrill’s Plan to Declare Emergency on Utility Costs Gains Key Support

By Adam Rizvi, The India Observer, TIO: BLOOMFIELD, NJ — As utility costs continue to soar across New Jersey, Congresswoman and gubernatorial candidate Mikie Sherrill’s proposal to declare a State of Emergency on Utility Costs is winning growing support. Evelyn Liebman, former Director of Advocacy for AARP New Jersey and a longtime consumer advocate, says Sherrill’s plan is both necessary and urgent.
In a recent NorthJersey.com opinion piece titled “Mikie Sherrill is right. NJ must declare an emergency on utility costs”, Liebman laid out why Sherrill’s approach is the right step forward.

“The first rule of holes: When you’re stuck in one, stop digging. This is precisely what Rep. Mikie Sherrill’s call to declare a state of emergency on New Jersey utility costs is all about. And we need it,” Liebman wrote.
Under New Jersey’s state constitution, the governor has the authority to declare emergencies during natural disasters, public health crises, and civil unrest. Liebman argues that skyrocketing utility bills pose a crisis of their own, requiring an all-of-government response.
New Jersey utility companies are pushing for hundreds of millions in new rate hikes — following average 20% increases in electric bills this past summer. Sherrill’s proposal to freeze rate hikes and prioritize relief for families would provide immediate stability.

“It’s about being able to stay in the homes and communities we’ve built our lives around, and about living without the constant worry of how to pay the next electric bill,” Liebman emphasized.
Liebman’s decades of advocacy — from AARP New Jersey to Citizen Action and the Board of Public Utilities — give weight to her endorsement. For her, Sherrill’s plan is clear: put consumers first, stop rate hikes, and ease the financial pressure on struggling families.
