Dear TIO Subscribers,
I am writing to share some observations regarding the current political climate in the Middle East and the recent developments in Iran. It’s clear that the actions of Netanyahu’s government have created widespread condemnation, particularly concerning the devastating loss of life in Gaza and the displacement of thousands of Palestinians. The international community, including many Americans, is increasingly vocal in demanding an end to the financing of what they perceive as war crimes and crimes against humanity. The recent attack on Iranian leaders has further destabilized the region, and there’s a strong global consensus that Netanyahu must be prevented from causing further harm.
In stark contrast to the narrative of a destabilized Iran, we witnessed an astonishing outpouring of support for the Iranian spiritual leader, Ali Khamenei, on Friday. The sheer number of Iranian men and women participating in Juma Namaz prayers in Tehran was truly remarkable, and it was particularly impactful to see Ayatollah Khamenei himself leading the prayers, dispelling any rumors of him being in hiding. This public display of unity follows a recent televised address where the spiritual leader, despite his age, encouraged Iranians to emulate Imam Husain’s resistance against oppression, which was met with millions taking to the streets in solidarity, including women carrying flags in support.
It appears that any notions of regime change in Iran, perhaps fueled by the idea of reinstating the Pahlavi rule, are deeply misguided. The Pahlavi regime was widely despised, and Reza Shah’s oppressive rule led to his forced flight in February 1979 amidst massive protests by unarmed Iranian citizens. It’s truly astonishing to reflect on Imam Khomeini leading the Islamic revolution in 1979 at the age of 79, and now, his student continues to safeguard that very revolution at the age of 86. The events of this past week demonstrate a profound misjudgment of the situation by those who envision a different future for Iran.
