By Adam Rizvi, The India Observer, TIO: In a heartbreaking turn of events, Dr. Maryam Shoukat, a 27-year-old Pakistani physician pursuing her residency in the United States, passed away just half an hour before she was scheduled to receive a life-saving liver transplant at Rutgers University Hospital in Newark, New Jersey.
Dr. Shoukat had come to the U.S. with dreams of healing others and serving humanity through medicine. Earlier this month, she was suddenly struck by acute liver failure, and her condition deteriorated rapidly. Doctors determined that an urgent transplant was her only hope for survival.

In a desperate effort to save her life, her husband, Dr. Hamza Zafar, reached out to the Association of Physicians of Pakistani Descent of North America (APPNA) for help. The response was immediate and overwhelming. Within just 24 hours, supporters raised $273,000, with contributions soon exceeding $400,000.
Moved by the collective outpouring, the hospital agreed to reduce the transplant cost from $900,000 to $450,000. APPNA promptly deposited $100,000, which enabled Maryam to be placed on the official transplant list. A matching donor organ was quickly located, renewing hope among her family and supporters around the globe.
Tragically, just moments before the surgery, Dr. Shoukat suffered brain herniation and slipped into a coma. Despite being placed on life support, doctors later confirmed she would not recover. She passed away soon after, surrounded by loved ones who had fought desperately for her survival.
