Big jolt to Cong, Amethi royal and ex-MP Sanjay Singh to join BJP

New Delhi, July 30, 2019: Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Singh, a close associate of the Gandhi family and a member of the royal family in Amethi, on Tuesday resigned from the Congress and the Rajya Sabha membership.

He told media at his residence that he would join the BJP on Wednesday and asserted that he would support Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the nation was behind him.

Singh’s wife Ameeta also quit the Congress and will join the BJP with him.

A former Congress MP, Singh is known to be close to the Gandhi family. He quit saying there was a “complete lack of dialogue” in the party and there was no clarity on its future.

“The Congress is suffering from a vacuum. It’s rudderless and directionless. We don’t know what’s going to happen and there’s no clarity. For months we have heard this leader and that leader will become party chief but nothing has happened. We have decided to quit Congress because India, a democracy, has rejected Congress,” Singh said.

The politician said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vishwas” has convinced him to join the BJP. “He is walking the talk, and that’s why the whole country is with him. The Congress, on the other hand, is living in the past and unaware of the future,” he claimed.

Ameeta Singh, who has represented Amethi twice in the Uttar Pradesh assembly, said their decision to quit was not a sudden one. “A party with no room for discussion will never progress. We have faith that we will be able to do great things for the people of India under the leadership of PM Modi,” she said.

She said that all opposition leaders, including those from the Congress, had failed to stand up against PM Modi on the arena of politics and governance. “Rahul Gandhi can himself tell us about the reason for his defeat in Amethi,” Ameeta Singh said.
